Intentions

Bedroom window: smoke in the shape of a seahorse

In truth sometimes I don’t set an intention for my practice, sometimes even when I’m inviting my students to do so — laughing at myself as I say it. Anyway, tonight I’ve got an intention far in advance. I want ENERGY! I was thinking about how my favorite teachers just burn up the room — Jillian, Tzahi. It’s almost as if their energy is in direct ratio to the amount of stillness in the poses they’re teaching. It’s not only verbal either — although it is there in the modulations of the voice — but it’s also very, very physical, and, dare I say, vibrational. I woke up thinking about how Ginsberg says in “No Direction Home” that Dylan as he performed was like “a column of air.” I saw the man many times during that early period and that’s exactly what I’m talking about. Looking it up on Google, Ginsberg also says this: “He became identified with his breath, like a shaman, with all his intelligence and consciousness focused on his breath.” (That Allen, he knew stuff, yeah?) Anyway, I know I’m gonna teach three long sequences tonight, but maybe what’s more important is that I intend to become that column of air! And it’s not just about my energy, it’s just as much or more about the energy in the students. Dylan and his audience fed each other — jeez, everything that was happening at that time fed it. The best teachers nurture the energy in the room, the sangha. Anyway, I don’t want to expect tooo much, my expectations are always so huge, but we’ll see how it goes!
